There you were at the holiday table filled with your closest friends and family. Inevitably somebody at the table has traded in their love of soap opera stars for an obsession with those handsome daytime TV doctors. Good looking, smart, and oh so helpful. So your aunt Martha is going on and on between helpings of stuffing about all the latest advances and advice she has learned from her dapper daytime medical consultants. You listen with an open mind and most of it sounds interesting and plausible but generally you’re a bit skeptical. Maybe you think Martha is a bit of a nut for believing everything she sees on TV. She is after all wiping her mouth with her new ShamWow she bought on QVC and she did bring beef, turkey, chicken, and vegetable jerky from her new Jerky machine. But maybe what she learned is true, the TV doctors are real doctors after all. Continue reading “Why you shouldn’t listen to TV doctors”
The news media shocks us on a daily basis with graphic images of war and violence across the globe. We see gruesome vidoes of mangled cityscapes and mourners in anguish. The fear of terrorism grips the globe and the cost of war weighs heavy on international treasuries. The cost of fighting terrorist and waging war has a ripple effect that spreads to the citizens of every country across the globe. Every dollar spent on weapons is a dollar taken away from medicine for the sick and food for the hungry. Every destroyed city block requires rebuilding that takes away resources for constructive pursuits. You know about these costs, but did you know that the costs of obesity are nearly as great?
It all started back in the early 1990s. Actually, it probably started long before that. It probably started the first time someone decided to sell a substance on the claim that it improved health. Fast forward a few millenia with some advances in chemistry and much better marketing techniques and you get the multibillion dollar nutritional supplement industry. Continue reading “What’s in your supplements?”

You know that voice in your head, the annoying one, that stands in the way of all your successes. It’s the one that tells you all the reasons you can’t, won’t, or shouldn’t. We all have it so I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. I’ve been thinking a lot about this voice recently and have noticed some important things. The voice does not work by overpowering you. Its success comes from its endless needling at you until you give in without even realizing you have succumbed. It’s small but relentless. It never fatigues. This is the voice that is preventing you from succesffully losing weight. But you already knew that, its your voice after all.

I was sitting in my office with a patient of mine the other day having a conversation I find myself having frequently. She was a long time smoker who I had diagnosed with severe COPD (the lung disease caused by damage from smoking). She had been hospitalized and was close to needing oxygen. Yet, in spite of my warnings and castigations, she had broken her brief period of abstinence and was back up to “only a half pack a day”. She was staring at the floor unable to look me in the eye like a child caught misbehaving by their parents. Continue reading “The Secret of Change”
The most fundamental reason why I wrote my book and keep up this blog is the belief that the only way for my patients, friends, and family to achieve successful weight loss and live healthy lives is to have an accurate understanding of how their bodies work. I have found over and over that when people understand the mechanisms and science behind their own physiology, they are less likely to fall prey to marketing scams and baseless claims on television. People frequently tell me that they have difficulty with exercise. They don’t know where to begin. They don’ t have gym memberships or, if they do, they don’ t know what to do when they get there. They don’t have time. These and many other excuses prompted me to come up with a four week challenge to help people get started on the path to improved fitness. The challenge will involve four different easy, at-home, no equipment workouts to be done every week for four weeks. Each of the workouts is timed and the goal of the challenge is to improve your time over the four week period. This is a challenge where the only person you compete against is yourself.
